Vagina itching is a very common problem for all women of all ages. Vaginal itching can be very uncomfortable and sometimes painful. It is a symptom that often occurs due to irritating constituents, infections, or maybe menopause. Vagina itching may also occur due to certain skin disorders like yeast or bacterial infections, irritants, or probably sexually transmitted disease. In some rare instances, vaginal itching might develop due to stress or vulva cancer.

CAUSES OF VAGINA ITCHING

  1. IRRITANTS

Vagina itching can be contacted from exposing the vagina to irritating some chemicals. These irritants could trigger an allergic reaction that develops an itching rash over various parts of the body, especially the vagina. Some examples of common irritants includes: soap, bubble baths, feminine sprays, douches, topical contraceptives, creams, ointments, detergents, fabric softeners, scented toilet paper etc.

Studies have also shown that diabetic patients are prone to developing vaginal itching.

  1. SKIN DISEASE

Skin diseases, such as eczema and psoriasis, can lead to redness and itching in the vagina. Eczema also known as dermatitis, is a rash that mostly occurs in people with asthma or allergies. The rash is reddish and itchy with a scaly texture. It may spread to the vagina in some cases with eczema.

While psoriasis is a common skin condition that causes itchy, scaly, red patches to form along the scalp and joints. Sometimes, the outbreaks of these symptoms can occur on the vagina as well.

  1. YEAST INFECTION

According to the Mayo Clinic, Yeast infection is a very common condition, affecting 3 out of 4 women at some point in their lives. The infection often occurs after taking a medication of antibiotics, as these type of medication can destroy good bacteria along with the bad bacteria.

The good bacteria are needed to keep yeast growth in check. The overgrowth of yeast in the vagina can result in uncomfortable symptoms, including itching, burning, and lumpy discharge.

  1. BACTERIA VAGINOSIS (BV)

Like a vaginal yeast infection, BV is triggered by an imbalance between naturally occurring good and bad bacteria in the vagina. The condition doesn’t always cause symptoms. When symptoms do appear, they typically include vaginal itching and an abnormal, discomforting  foul-smelling discharge. The discharge may be thin and dull gray or white. In some cases, it might also be foamy.

  1. SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE (STD)

STDs can be transmitted during unprotected sexual intercourse and cause itching in the vagina. These include: Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Genital herpes, and Genital warts. These conditions can also cause additional symptoms, including abnormal growths, green or yellow vaginal discharge, and pain while urinating.

  1. MENOPAUSE

Women who are going through menopause or who have already done so are more at risk for vaginal itching. This is due to the reduction of estrogen levels that occur during menopause, which leads to vaginal atrophy. This is a thinning of the mucosa that can lead to excessive dryness. The dryness can cause itching and irritation if you don’t get treatment for it.

  1. STRESS

Physical and emotional stress can cause vaginal itching and irritation, though this isn’t very common. It might occur when stress weakens your immune system, leaving you more prone to the infections that cause itching.

  1. VULVAR CANCER

In rare cases, vaginal itching may be a symptom of vulvar cancer. This is a type of cancer that develops in the vulva, which is the external part of the female’s genitals. It includes the inner and outer lips of the vagina, the clitoris, and the opening of the vagina. Vulvar cancer may not always cause symptoms. However, when symptoms do occur, they may include itching, abnormal bleeding, or pain in the vulvar area. Vulvar cancer can be treated successfully if your doctor diagnoses it in the early stages. This is another reason that yearly gynecologist checkups are essential.

How To Cure Vaginal Itching

ICE CUBE

Ice cube is good for instant relief from vagina itching. To reduce the inflammation or itching, place the cube on the affected area.

Procedures;

  • Wrap and secure the ice cube in a clean towel
  • Apply the wrapped ice on the vagina for a few minutes.
  • Take a break for a few seconds before reapplying.
  • Repeat as needed until you are relived.
  • Rinse the affected area with cold water

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR MIX

Apple cider vinegar is noted for its effectiveness in combating against antibacterial and anti-fungi. It also assists in restoring the pH balance of your vagina.

Procedures:

  • Add two (2) table spoon of infiltrated apple cider vinegar to a warm glass of water.
  • Use this solution to wash the vagina every morning and night continuously until you get result.

YOGURT

Although this looks weird and might sound a bit off but another good remedy to stop itching and burning in and around your vagina is a plain, unsweetened yogurt. It can curtail the spread of infection in the body and also helps to terminate yeast and other bacteria in the vagina and enhance the growth of good bacteria.

Procedures; 

Use a tampon and deep it in yogurt and insert it in the vagina for two hours. Do it unfailingly, twice daily until you get result. Also eat a few cups of plain unsweetened yogurt every day.

GARLIC

Garlic contains antibacterial as well as antibiotic components that boosts the immune system and assist in fighting against bacteria and yeast.

Procedures;

  • Dissolve a few drops of garlic oil with 1 teaspoon of vitamin E oil and apply it on the affected area.
  • Wait for 10 minutes then rinse with warm water. Use this remedy twice daily for a few weeks.
  • Chew 3 cloves of raw garlic daily.

SALT WATER BATH

Bathing with salt water can also relieve vaginal itching. Salt aid in the growth of the microbes causing the infection and consequently, reduce itching and other discomforts.

Procedures;

  • Add 1 tea spoon of salt to a glass of clean water and use it to wash your vagina whenever you feel the itch. This will relief your body instantly.
  • You can also add ½ cup of salt in your bathtub filled with warm water and sit in the water in a squatting position for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Repeat 2 or 3 times daily for a few days for optimal result.

Note: Avoid using any skin remedy if you have any tear or open sores as this would worsen the situation.
