The importance of possessing an international passport cannot be overestimated. If you are planning to travel or need a valid means of identification, you have to get the passport. Although a lot of people know about the passport, they are unclear about the procedure required to get one. That is why we have compiled a set of instruction on how to get the Nigerian passport.
To get your international passport in Nigeria, the set of instructions are pretty basic, and you should have been able to get the whole process at the end of this article;
Guidelines on how to get your international passport in Nigeria
Documents required
- letter of identification from the Local Government
- Birth certificate/declaration of age.
- 2 colored passport photographs recently taken
- Guarantor’s form sworn to before a commissioner of Oaths / Magistrate / High Court Judge
- Parents’ letter of consent for minors (children under the age of 16)
- Marriage certificate (if married)
- Police report in case of lost passport
- Submit application with supporting documents to the passport office / Embassy / High Commission
- Proof of payment.

Applying for the passport
- On a computer with internet connection, visit the portal of Nigerian immigration services
- Select passport type and choose “standard e-passport’ or ‘official e-passport.’
- Fill out the application form with all requested details and submit.
- You will be directed to ‘applicants detail page,’ select ‘proceed to online payment.’
- Complete the payment process with naira or dollars with your credit/debit card.
- You can also pay with your bank by selecting the option. You would have to print an acknowledgment slip and proceed to your bank to make the payment.
- After payment, you will be given an application ID and reference number.
- After you have obtained those details, you can now go back to the portal and choose ‘query application status.’ Enter the application number and reference no.
- You might see a validation number request, enter the one generated at the bank.
- When you clock on submit, select ‘search record,’ and you will see the date which your interview is scheduled for.
- Note the data and print your acknowledgment slip. That is it for the online method.
Offline process
After you are done with the online process, you will then take all the document listed above and then proceed to the immigration office closest to you. For Nigerians living abroad, you can do that at the Nigerian consulate nearest to you.
